SRT Low-Latency Streaming over the Internet
Jul 27, 2022
Many operators need to send streams to remote locations. Streaming over a spotty public network is a no-no, There are other solutions out there that can be used to deliver high-bandwidth, low-latency video streams over unmanaged networks. Most of these are proprietary solutions that can be very expensive and are only implemented in a handful of products. Or requiring dedicated fiber links or MPLS. Using private network infrastructure is the best approach.
But it's costly and challenging to orchestrate. And regardless of network, latency climbs high in most streaming workflows. The majority of broadcasters surveyed in our Video Streaming Latency Report indicated that they experienced latency in the 10-45 second range.
SRT will be the solution
SRT stands for "Secure Reliable Transport", an RTMP alternative designed by Haivision to transport low-latency streams over noisy networks. SRT uses secure streams and easy firewall traversal to optimize streaming performance and deliver high-quality video over even the most unreliable networks.
The open-source protocol addresses the challenges of remote video contribution while maintaining speedy delivery.
Being open-source, SRT is available to all video processing developers and has been integrated into multiple platforms on the market. With the reliance on the same underlying code base, interoperability between distribution and contribution devices is simplified.
Why we choose SRT
Sending video over UDP across the Internet is a problem due to the nature of UDP. Depending on network conditions packet loss is likely. Sending high quality video is very likely to result in a bad user experience.
Video delivery over the internet can be unpredictable. Operators need a video delivery protocol that is reliable and secure. Moreover, operators want to increase the efficiency of the video delivery process, while also maintaining exceptional video quality.

SRT optimizes streaming performance across noisy or unpredictable networks while addressing
security concerns and focussing on high performance video.
SRT is designed to protect against jitter, packet loss and bandwidth fluctuations to help ensure the best viewing experience. This new transport protocol uses advanced lowlatency retransmission
techniques to protect streams against packet loss.
As video and audio packets are streamed between two endpoints, SRT detects and adapts to the real-time network conditions between the source and destination devices. SRT also supports end-to-end AES encryption to ensure streams are protected from contribution to distribution. SRT ensures easy firewall traversal by using a caller/stener handshake concept. The handshaking process used by SRT respects existing security policies by allowing outbound connections without requiring,
permanent exterior ports to be opened in a firewall.
Send streams securely and reliably over the internet to remote headend sites or hospitality networks.
Replace RTP+FEC and improve overhead bandwidth usage.
Replace expensive satellite distribution deployments to reduce costs.
Leverage the internet and deliver high-quality video securely to different cities, countries and even continents.

Benefits of SRT
High quality: Provides professional, high-grade video across any network - withstanding up to 10% packet loss without detectable degradation.
Resilient: Maintains stream integrity by accounting for packet loss, jitter, and fluctuating bandwidth.
Cost-effective: Replaces expensive satellite networks or rigid MPLS networks with the affordable and flexible public internet.
Interactive: Allows you to deliver two-way, interactive video from anywhere.
Low latency: Enables near real-time IP communications as fast as UDP with the reliability of TCP.
Media-agnostic: Acts as a wrapper around your content - be it MPEG-2, H.264, or even HEVC.
Secure: Provides 128/256 bit AES encryption for secure transmission over the internet.
Firewall friendly: Reliably streams from unknown locations and event centers without requiring additional IT resources.
Open source: Delivers interoperability and longevity due to large-scale adoption
